Since 1997
I have been learning the art of flamenco guitar accompaniment for
flamenco dance and song. For over ten years I learned from and performed
with
Arte Flamenco Spanish Dance
company. I have also accompanied dance classes at the
Academy of Spanish Dance and
Theatre Flamenco. Currently I
perform weekly in Toronto Spanish restaurants
The Plaza Flamingo
and
Embrujo Flamenco. Performing
in these restaurants has given me the opportunity to work with and learn
from many independent and talented dancers and singers.
The flamenco paintings here are inspired by my own experiences as a flamenco performer/artist and the characters are loosely based on real people. With this body of work I attempt to capture the dark soulful nature of flamenco but at the same time poke a little fun at it. Just like with Bulerias (to jest) where a great focus of tension must be employed to release the music, yet there is a teasing of any predictability.
